Leonardo Del Vecchio was born in Milan, Italy in 1935 as a child of an impoverished family. His father died five months prior to his birth. He was given to an orphanage by his mother because she could not support him. He began his career as an apprentice to a tool and dye maker in Milan, but decided to turn his metalworking skills to make spectacle parts.
So in 1961 he moved to Agordo, a city which is home to most of Italy’s eyewear industry to set up his own shop. That eyeglass frame shop expanded to the world`s largest maker of sunglasses and prescription eye wear. Luxottica makes brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley, with 6, 000 retail shops like Sunglass Hut and Lens Crafter. His estimated net worth is now above US$19 billion. (Source Forbes magazine)
What does that tell us about our situation today?
No matter how tough it gets, if you are positive minded, hardworking, with an eye for opportunities and not focusing on problems, and a bull dog tenacity, you will make it and achieve your dreams. All the successful entrepreneurs we know today went through difficult times at one time or another. Some multiple times or for long periods. So whatever the economy is going through, it is just a cycle and things will turn around for those who are always period to grab opportunities.
You just need to dream big enough, like what one young entrepreneur from Bulawayo is doing: aiming at the global market with his mobile apps.
