Local procurement is the best way of empowering Zimbabwean entrepreneurs
By Phillip Chichoni
Last week Zimplats, the largest platinum miner in Zimbabwe, in flighted an advertisement in the national press inviting bidders for its ore-haulage services. The company had been utilizing the services of South African haulage companies.
There has been grumblings on why the indigenization and SME ministries were keeping mum when many tenders by both private companies and government departments where being awarded to South African and other foreign SMEs. (The recent tender for ZESA energy saving bulbs was awarded to a South African small company, which simply imported the bulbs from China.)
Those Zimbabwean entrepreneurs who are serious can now participate in the lucrative haulage business for Zimplats. There is no crying out that there are no loans or capital to purchase haulage trucks: simply engage the South Africa transporters for joint ventures. They have the experience and capacity, we are the Zimbabweans. All you need is to purchase the tender documents at Zimplats, then invite interested South African hauliers and craft a winning proposal.
Remember, tender documents are only available until Friday 9th November, so they is no time to waste.
